From 3-8 September 2023 NABIHEAL partner Technion presented a poster “Analysis of Hydrogel Matrices using Advanced Electron Microscopy” at ECIS 2023, showing work performed with partners University of Maribor and Histocell.
The 37th Conference of the European Colloid and Interface Society (ECIS) took place from 3-8 September 2023 in Naples (Italy).
ECIS 2023 is organized by the University of Naples Federico II and CSGI, under the auspices of ECIS, bringing together participants working in the interdisciplinary field of colloid and interface science, with a broad background ranging from chemistry to physics, from biology to engineering.
The poster demonstrated the characterization of hydrogel matrices for wound management, using complementary high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) techniques. SEM methods scan the surface of the specimen and provide valuable information on the topography at different length scales, and composition. Most SEM characterization is done with dry samples, but analyzing hydrated gels at low temperatures can further unfold the inner 3D structure, pore size distribution and other characteristics of the sample. The authors combined structural insight from classical SEM (dry-SEM), environmental-SEM (E-SEM) that allows ambient humidity by adjusting the chamber pressure and temperature, and Cryogenic-SEM (Cryo-SEM) where the samples are prepared in the wet state and examined at low temperatures.
